Stopping a heavy 4x4 isn't the same as stopping a stock sedan. When you increase tire size, you increase the rotational mass and leverage that the brakes have to fight against. The Downside of Vacuum

The biggest weakness of a vacuum system is that it depends entirely on the engine's ability to create a vacuum. If you’ve installed a high-performance camshaft with a lot of overlap, your engine vacuum will drop. This leads to a "hard" pedal and inconsistent braking performance. Furthermore, at high altitudes: like when you’re trekking through the high passes near Park City: the air is thinner, and vacuum efficiency can drop, leaving you with less assist when you need it most.

Best For: Rigs with 35" tires or larger, heavy builds, high-performance engines, and anyone who wants "eye-ball popping" stopping power ($$).

Hydroboost doesn't care about engine vacuum. Instead, it taps into your power steering system. It uses the hydraulic pressure generated by the power steering pump to provide the assist for the master cylinder. Because hydraulic fluid is incompressible and the pump operates at high pressures, the amount of assist you get is significantly higher than any vacuum system.

  1. Massive Clamping Force: While a vacuum booster might put out around 900 psi, a well-tuned Hydroboost system can push that closer to 2,400 psi. That is a massive jump in stopping power.
  2. Compact Design: Vacuum boosters are huge. On an Early Bronco, they take up a ton of real estate on the firewall. Hydroboost units are much slimmer, making them ideal for tight engine bays or builds where you need room for other accessories.

The Downside of Hydroboost

The main trade-off is complexity. You’re adding high-pressure hydraulic lines into the mix. If your power steering pump fails or you throw a belt, you lose both your steering assist and your brake assist (though most systems have a nitrogen-charged accumulator that gives you 2-3 "emergency" stops). It’s also more expensive to set up than a basic vacuum kit.
